Films in Retrospective

7:00pm

Join Ten Years Ago: Films in Retrospective this fall for a series of screenings, guest speakers, and discussions revisiting the early work of celebrated American film director David O. Russell. An influential contributor to the emergence of ‘mainstream’ independent cinema in the 1990s, Russell’s last three films (THE FIGHTER, SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, AMERICAN HUSTLE) have garnered a host of accolades and transformed the director into a major player in Hollywood cinema. Russell’s early work proves that he is a master of finding humor and drama in ordinary lives, even when those lives are thrust into extraordinary situations. Occasioned by the ten year anniversary of I ♥ HUCKABEES, this extended 're-view' of Russell’s first four movies will give viewers another peek at the director’s wide-ranging early experiments with genre, his knack for compelling characterization, his artful storytelling, and his unique visual style. Over the course of five weeks and four Mondays, we’ll revisit and explore these aspects and more as we tour through the darkly comic family drama of SPANKING THE MONKEY (1994), the farcical road trip adoption fiasco of FLIRTING WITH DISASTER (1996), the Gulf War political satire of THREE KINGS (1999), and the ‘existential comedy’ of I ♥ HUCKABEES (2004). So join us this fall at LUCID Lounge for a look back at one of the 21st century’s most talented, successful, and thought-provoking American directors. All film screenings will be prefaced with brief guest commentary and followed by a discussion open to all attendees. Event Schedule: Monday, October 27th: SPANKING THE MONKEY (1994) Guest Speakers: Marcus Gorman, Stevi Costa

Loops for Lovers Collective

9:30pm

"The Loops for Lovers Collective (Alana Belle -singer/songwriter & KMTK -producer/creative director) have known one another since before they were born. Their mothers have been best friends since the 9th grade, so as the saying goes, the rest was history. While it was their mothers’ friendship that connected them, it was their shared love of music that brought them together to create short, but sweet, soulful tunes. Inspired by the records they heard spinning at family parties and in tape decks cruising around the lake, the music is carefully curated, and minimally altered, to preserve the beauty of each original composition. Vocals and story add texture to each piece, breathing new life into vintage soul cuts. The Loops for Lovers Collective have set out to honor the past, while creating a new soul that is meant to be heard and experienced.
“This is beat-head soul that blends the distinct comforts of late Saturday night and early Sunday morning, a crucial, classic combo in black music if there ever was… Find this music and slap it back to front like five times before you notice, and you won't be sad you did.” - - -The Stranger

Don't Move

9:00pm

Don't Move is: Bob Ainley - piano; Ray Clemens - bass; Jeff DeRoshia - drums A delicate balance exists in jazz between original music and standards. Jazz is the music we play, love, and listen...for more than a century. And yet, it's time for us to forge our own path onto the future of jazz, leaving history as history. It's how jazz is. In Don't Move, there's a rich spring of original compositions and just enough standards. Just so there's no confusion, anything written/recorded before today is a standard. In 1996, Herbie Hancock released Nirvana's "All Apologies" on the album 'The New Standard'. If Herbie says it's a standard, it's a standard. Strictly instrumental and most often improvisational, this piano trio of ours flirts with the outskirts, stretching the limit of each song, all the while never leaving the listener hanging. Well...we try our best. You won't see the same show twice. Don't Move...we got this.

Animals of Grace

7:00pm

"Musical duo Animals of Grace toe the folk line of story-telling traditions and alternative rhythms to bring you a musical experience that's energetic, contemplative and sincere.
Animals of Grace is proud to announce the release of their debut EP “Make Me Kind.” This 5-song, bi-coastal album was written by folk-duo Erika Lundahl and Doug Indrick spanning a New York to Seattle transplant in late 2013. The 5 song album has a raw folk energy, rife with vocal harmonies, guitar tapping, driving djembe, cajon, and auxiliary percussion. The duo’s collective sound is infused with environmental and socially passionate lyrics that are at once searching and soulful. The unique style of the band has been described as bearing, “elements of Ani DiFranco, Kaki King, and Joan Baez. Just the sweet grassy tips, short the commitment to gimmickery most people who manage to ""sound like"" end up hiding in.” Seattle-based guitarist and songwriter Erika Lundahl and percussionist Doug Indrick began collaborating in 2012 in Upstate New York."
